The Richmond Residence was an extensive 7 month design / build remodel for the owner of a hardwood lumber company. In designing the project, primary consideration was given to the low 8’ ceilings and the small, compartmentalized rooms. The response was to gut the interior space, removing the existing ceiling, and redefine a new, sloped ceiling condition.
Reminders of the old height are expressed through a continuous shelf wrap that ends in an open transom above a sliding translucent wall. Spaces are reorganized from an enfilade of small rooms, into a continuous kitchen, dining, living space with optional privacy in den. Rich wood materiality expresses the clients financial as well as spiritual connection to wood.
